Important note for students

Dear students:

I have no idea how this happened, but I have posted your interactive blog to the wrong spot. However, this is a good way to introduce and record just how you should navigate to the class blog.

TO POST YOUR COMMENTS, go to whstomahawk.blogspot.com

When prompted to respond, click on "create a new account" (not create your own blog).

Your sign in should be your first and last name -- the one that will show up on the blog.

Unsigned, anonymous, or "first name only" responses will not be published.

Please do not include photos. DO ask your parents to follow!

John Winthrop: City Upon a Hill

"For we must Consider that we shall be as a City upon a Hill, the eyes of all people are upon us; so that if we shall deal falsely with our god in this work we have undertaken and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword through the world, we shall open the mouths of enemies to speak evil of the ways of god and all professors for Gods sake; we shall shame the faces of many of gods worthy servants, and cause their prayers to be turned into Curses upon us till we be consumed out of the good land whether we are going"... John Winthrop

Explain the context of John Winthrop's most quoted lines (where was he, under what circumstances did he say these words?). Who was the intendence audience? For your "close reading," think "beyond the lines": How has the first line quote come to represent American ideals?

Welcome, Honors English 10-Pre-AP Students

Dear students:

We're off to a great year. What an inspiring, spirited group of young people you are!

Welcome, too, to our class blog. On this blog, you'll respond to questions (in an essay format, please), and if your writing is deemed worthy of posting, you will receive a grade for your blog post.

Keep in mind that this is a formal blog. Therefore, slang and shortcuts you might use on e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, etc., are inappropriate.

When you respond to a post, do not begin with "yes" or "I think that." Write a topic sentence. Stick to your point. Keep it brief, but do be thorough.

It's important that you learn how to post discussion question responses on the Internet, because your college future will include many online courses that require Internet usage and public forums. The key word here is public -- remember that you represent your school, your parents, yoru class, your community, your teachers -- and most of all, yourselves -- for all the world to hear.

That said, I know you'll do your best. Invest your time wisely in preparing your responses. I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Keep up the good work!

Sincerely,
Susan Shehane
